Posted by Christine Pulgar at 2/10/2017
Our annual (13th in fact!) Read-a-thon fundraiser will be Friday, February 17, 2017.  This is a whole school event that celebrates a love of literature through a variety of reading activities.  This year our theme is "Kindness, Compassion and Empathy" and we're so excited to see what our talented teachers have planned.  Our students will rotate through six sessions and see many teachers during the day.  This is a fun and exciting event for Glen Oaks!

All pledge envelopes need to be turned in by February 17, 2017. in order to be eligible for prizes.  If a student has lost the pledge envelope, just put your donations in a regular envelope, mark it with the student's name and return it to the classroom teacher.

This year our fundraiser will help outfit our Mobile Maker Space cart with robotics kits, Legos, and other STEAM related activities for our students. We are so thankful to everyone who donates funds. Each student who brings in any donation of $1-$5 will receive one raffle ticket.  For every additional $5 raised, the student will receive an additional pink raffle ticket. For example a student who raises $3.50 will get ONE raffle ticket, a student who raises $11 will get TWO raffle tickets.  The prizes range from restaurant gift certificates to books to games and other fun items.

In addition, the top three fundraising students who raise the most money will receive Book Fair gift certificates ($25, $15 and$10) and the two classrooms that raise the most money will receive $25 in Book Fair gift certificates. If every student in our school raises $5, we'll be able to add almost 200 new books to our collection!

Thank you in advance for all donations collected.  We are proud to have an amazing collection of books, digital media, and materials which is due in part to the funds raised at our yearly Read-a-thon.

    Happy Reading!

This year our students will once again partipate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  The classroom Spelling Bees will be held during Library Media class the week of Dec 7-11, 2015.  Here's how it works:

    • Each classroom winner will participate in the Glen Oaks finals the week of Dec 14-18, 2015 in one Spelling Bee. (Thursday December 17, 2015.)

    • We will take the top 3 three students from the champions round and those three students will compete against the Oak Ridge Champions in January.

    • The winner of that Spelling Bee will be our North Palos District representative at the area Spelling Bee (held in late Jan/early Feb - TBD)

Spelling study guides have been given to all 3-5th graders who signed up and to all 2nd grade students.  Remember that these lists are a GUIDE and do not represent the actual words in the Spelling Bee.
