Standard: Find the main idea and supporting details.

Students should be able to explain the main idea or something they read.  Main idea is asking “what is this mostly about?”  The main idea should sum up the story or article in 1 sentence, leaving out the important facts and details.  The details include all of the information that tells you more about the main idea.

Activities:  Have your student read an article in the news paper or a magazine.  Ask them to use one of these graphic organizers to tell the main idea and supporting details.
