Dorn ISEL Home Activities
Snapshot #1: Alphabet Recognition
Make or buy flashcards to practice at home.
While reading a story, ask your child to find a particular letter. If they are unsure of the letter, point to it on the page and have your child find it somewhere else on the page.
While you are driving, make note of all of the store signs. For example: "Look, there is Target. What letter does it begin with? What other letters do you see?"
Have your child practice writing their name and saying the letters they are writing.
Practice writing letters. Find letters on common objects around the house (magazines, cereal boxes, etc.).
Make games at home such as: ABC Bingo, ABC Memory, ABC Slapjack, etc. Get magnet letters to put on the refrigerator and have your child find a specific letter.
Practice letters using markers, paint, chalk, and dry erase markers. Have your child say the letters as they write them.
Make letters with materials such as pipe cleaners, play dough, and macaroni.
Rainbow writing: A parent writes letters on a sheet of paper. The child can trace over the letter four times with different color crayons or markers.
Sing the alphabet song while pointing to the letters.
Play letter games with your child. You can write or name a letter for your child.
With your child look around the house in magazines, newspapers, packages or signs to find the letter.
