Oak Ridge Elementary School

Oak Ridge Elementary School, opened in 1959, serves 550 students in Grades 2-5. We are a multicultural school and are proud of our many heritages as depicted by a large mural in our front entrance. Our school is built around a courtyard on a large wooded site. The courtyard features a Mosaic Story Circle and garden that depicts the four elements of nature: earth, fire, water and air. Both the Multicultural Mural and Story Circle were designed and developed in a cooperative effort between students, staff and parents. We have 30 classrooms, a Media Center, Computer Lab and gym. We strive through our programs to meet the diverse needs of our students.

The community, the district, and school all work together to provide an environment that is conducive to learning, has a positive climate for growth and development and an understanding of the diverse needs of its student population.

Our curriculum is based on the Illinois Learning Standards and Descriptors. Our curriculum has been mapped out on a monthly basis. Students are assessed quarterly in Reading and monthly in Math.

In addition to our regular core curriculum we also offer students: Art, Music, PE, Library/Computers, Reading Resource, Learning Disabilities Resource, Speech/Language Communications, TPI, Accelerated Reader, Explorations (Gifted Classes), Outdoor Education Classes and Band for fifth grade.

We offer a variety of after school programs that include tutoring, PE, Chorus and Student Council.

We are fortunate to have an active PTA that provides field trips, assemblies, parties for students, two book fairs, popcorn days and many other events for students. They have also raised money for playground equipment; TV/VCR’s for all the classrooms and just recently helped us automate our library. We welcome our community volunteers.
