    Meet Mrs. Szubert

I started teaching in 1998. The time has really flown and I am fortunate enough to have a job I really love. Over the years I have taught kindergarten, fifth grade, second grade, and a multi-age 1st-3rd grade classroom. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Teaching and Learning. Also I am certified to teach music and social studies. I love learning and hope to inspire my students to learn something new everyday.

When I am not in school, my family loves taking daytrips to Wisconsin and all over Illinois. My daughter keeps us very busy with her boundless energy. My husband is a graphic artist and cartoonist.

    My Favorites

    Colors: Blue, yellow, and green

    Animal: hummingbirds

Movies: Eat, Pray, Love,  Little Women

Music: I listen to a wide variety of music and I really like country, Elton John, Melissa Ethridge, Joe Bonamassa, and Bruce Springsteen (I have seen him at least six times!)

What I want to be when I grow up: I knew I wanted to be a teacher in second grade. I used to charge the little kids on my block a quarter to come in my basement to do their homework so I could be the teacher. If I wasn't teaching, I would want to play music for movie soundtracks or in a major orchestra. I can play the flute oboe, and cello.

Interesting Tidbits: I have met Jane Goodall and Jimmy Carter. I have autographed books from each of them. When I was 16 my dad taught me to fly single engine airplanes, I never got my pilot's license though. I originally went to the Chicago Musical College downtown to study music before transferring to St. Xavier University to double major in Elementary Education and Music Education. I have played with the Southwest Symphony Orchestra and made a Christmas CD with them. I volunteered as a Delta Society Pet Partner with my Labrador Retriever and visited the Spinal Rehab and Blind Center at Hines Veteran's Hospital. Also I was a volunteer teacher at the Ronald McDonald Children's Hospital at Loyola Medical Center. I taught the long-term care children and assisted with their graduation ceremony at the end of the school year.

Food: My favorite restaurant is Nickson's in LaGrange and Starbucks. I definitely can't make it through the day without a cup of my favorite coffee or tea.

Most Memorable Vacations: The summer I went to Mackinaw Island with my parents, husband and daughter was a definite favorite. I have also vacationed in St. Croix and Jamaica. My favorite childhood vacation was when my family drove up and down the East Coast. We love to visit Disney World whenever possible.

When I'm not teaching: I love to knit and I can spin my own yarn with a drop spindle. My family loves to be busy. We enjoy visiting the different neighborhoods in Chicago, going to the movies, enjoying local museums and gardens, and hiking through the forest preserves.
