Reading decoding is the practice of using various reading skills to read or “decode” words – to figure out what a word is. There are many strategies we can teach
children to use when they get to a word they don’t know. Below are some of the strategies you can have our child try when reading with you at home.

*Remember that it is our goal to make your child a successful independent reader. Simply telling him/her a word they don’t know might help them get through the story, but it does not teach them the strategies they could use in the future when they get stuck on a word. Only tell your child the word after he/she tried the strategies mentioned above.*
