• Progression of Question Difficulty

Click on the following link for ideas of questions you can ask your preschooler, kindergartener, or first grader.

The left column contains the skill or concept the question addresses.  The first chart contains general questions which can be asked with any book.  The next chart is to be used with informational texts (nonfiction books).  The last chart is to be used with stories (fiction books).

If your child is in preschool, you will be doing a lot of modeling - you will be asking the questions and giving your child the answer if he/she doesn't know it.

If your child is in kindergarten, they should be able to answer the preschool questions independently and may need a little support answering the kindergarten questions.  Kindergarteners should also begin practicing asking themselves these questions while they read or you read to them.

First graders should be in the habit of asking themselves these questions while they read or you read to them.  With minimal support, they should be able to answer these questions too.
