School Closures and Student Resources (March 16)

School Closures and Student Resources

March 16, 2020

Dear NPD117 Families,

Thank you for your continued patience and support as we work together to keep everyone safe. Our schedule will evolve based upon any new information we receive. Due to Governor Pritzker’s school closure mandate and our regularly scheduled Spring Break, NPD117’s schedule is as follows:

School Closures and Learning Resources:

All schools are closed Monday, March 16 through Monday, March 30, 2020.  ISBE has compiled a library of resources at Our staff has gathered additional resources that can be accessed here. These optional activities are provided for families to complete at home during the school closure. However, teachers will not be assigning or grading work during the school closure weeks (March 16 - March 30, 2020).

Meals:  Meals are available at no cost to all children 18 and under. Meal packets can be picked up between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM from Tuesday, March 17, 2020, until Friday, March 20, 2020. One breakfast and one lunch will be served per packet. Families are to drive up to the service area located outside the north side of Conrady Junior High School. Families will remain in their own cars and meals will be brought to you by our staff. Please call 708-233-4514 to speak with Food Services with questions or concerns including the inability to pick up meals at these times.

(Back parking lot on the north end of the building.  Enter through the north entrance on Roberts Road and follow the traffic cones to proceed to door 8 to receive a meal.  Vehicles will exit via the south entrance onto Roberts Road.)

Next Steps:  We anticipate reopening on Tuesday, March 31, 2020. However, this is a rapidly-evolving situation, so we encourage families and staff to prepare for the possibility of an extended closure. We are receiving updates from health officials and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and we will update you promptly should our plans change. If we are unable to reopen on March 31, 2020, NPD117 students will receive instruction using our e-learning plan.  Students would learn from home at this time. Assignments will be available for students to access at home. More detailed information will be sent in the event we implement our e-learning plan on March 31, 2020.

In closing, concern over this new virus can make children anxious. Adults can reassure children that health and school officials are working hard to ensure that people throughout the country stay healthy.

The Illinois Department of Public Health recommends the best way to protect against coronavirus is by taking the same everyday precautions against getting sick in general. These include:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially if they are visibly dirty. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol is a suitable alternative. Consider showing your children one of these videos about proper handwashing technique:
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
  • Stay home if you are able to stay home. Avoid travel if you can.

The National Association of School Psychologists has additional guidelines about talking to children about COVID-19 at

Last Day of School:  At this point, the last day of school has not changed.  It remains May 28, 2020.
