Weather Info and FAQ's

To The North Palos School District 117 Learning Community:
Each year, our winter weather presents challenges. As someone who has lived in this area her whole life, the weather experienced this time of year reminds me of my childhood. I recall the beauty of the snow and spending many afternoons, evenings and weekends sledding with friends. I hope our children will enjoy some of the same happy winter memories this season.

As an adult who not only commutes to work each day in this weather but also has the additional challenge of making the delicate decision whether or not to use one of our EMERGENCY DAYS, the cold temperatures and snow present challenges that include the safety of our staff and students.

Below, I have listed some of the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding EMERGENCY DAYS. To date, no decisions have been made to close school this year. However, if we do need to use one of our EMERGENCY DAYS, parents and staff will receive an automated phone call and email (if registered).

We are also working to include text messaging.

Please BE SURE your child's parent/emergency contact information is up-to-date. We will post EMERGENCY DAY information on our school district HOME page ( If, after reviewing the below information, you have any questions or seek additional information about this or any district process or policy, please feel free to contact me.
Yours in education,
Jeannie Stachowiak, Ed. D.

Question: What are EMERGENCY DAYS and when are they taken?
Answer: EMERGENCY DAYS are days that school is cancelled. EMERGENCY DAYS are not SNOW DAYS as they are not taken only due to heavy snowfall. EMERGENCY DAYS are cancellation days that may be due to any type of extreme weather. However, they may also occur during a utility outage, or other event that negatively affects student instruction and/or safety.
Question: Are EMERGENCY DAYS part of our Academic Calendar(s)?
Answer: Yes. Every Academic Calendar lists potential EMERGENCY DAYS. Therefore, staff and families are encouraged to assume that all EMERGENCY DAYS may be used during the academic year. Summer vacations and special summer events should be planned accordingly. If you plan a vacation for the end of the year, and we take one or more EMERGENCY DAYS, your child will be missing instruction.
Question: How does NPD117 determine whether an EMERGENCY DAY is used?
Answer: If the EMERGENCY DAY is due to weather, the system is as follows:
1. The area superintendents remain in close contact to determine whether extreme safety concerns exist that may pose a safety risk to students arriving to and departing from school.
2. The area superintendents closely monitor the weather forecasts during the time being considered.
3. The NPD117 superintendent remains in close contact with the NPD117 Transportation Department Supervisor to determine if the buses are able to safely run routes.
If NPD 117, based on the best available information, determines that an EMERGENCY DAY is necessary, the notification system is enacted as soon as possible. However, please understand that weather is unpredictable, and we may not be able to determine an EMERGENCY DAY will need to be used until the morning.
