Former District 117 Student Collecting Shoes for Less Fortunate

Jared Muhr is weighing his options after he graduates from Stagg High School in May. There's the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.

Both, he reasons, will provide him with a great education. But the Coast Guard, Muhr said, would "provide me with the experience I need to help others. And helping is what I want to continue doing. The Coast Guard is involved in a lot of search and rescue. And that sounds interesting to me."

The 17-year-old Hickory Hills' resident is always looking to help others. Recently, his aunt told him about Soles4Souls, an organization steeped in helping provide slightly used shoes for the less fortunate.

Since he started placing boxes inside park districts and city halls, Muhr has collected 150 pairs of gently worn shoes. He recently placed boxes inside District 117 schools and the district office for teachers and students to donate shoes.
