Dorn Principal Uses YouTube to Read "Bedtime Stories."

Dorn School Principal Eileen McCaffrey put a whole new spin on the adage that “there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book.”

Less than a week after school let out for the summer, Dr. McCaffrey hosted her first in a series of “Bedtime Stories” on YouTube. Beginning at 7 p.m. each Sunday, McCaffrey, a voracious reader who espouses the merits of reading to her young students, can be found inside her home in front of a camera sharing one of many children’s favorites.

The first book she read two weeks ago was titled “The Pigeon Wants a Puppy” by Mo Willems. The stories last about 10 minutes and Dr. McCaffrey employs pitch and intonation to help her audience feel what is happening on the pages.

While reading “The Pigeon Wants a Puppy,” McCaffrey, in her pajamas and with a bowl of popcorn, had a couple of helpers bring the story to life when her real-life puppies Flynn and newly acquired Copper joined her.

Just last night, she read the book “Bear Snores On” by Karma Wilson in a makeshift “cave fort” made of blankets and chairs.

Dr. McCaffrey added some levity to the story by telling viewers how “Mr. McCaffrey snores just like the bear.”

“In fact, I wear earplugs to bed because Mr. McCaffrey snores so loud,” she said.
