Principal McCaffrey Honored for Fostering Diversity and Inclusion

Dorn School Principal Eileen McCaffrey received the 2019 Community Service Award from the Mosque Foundation for her "exemplary efforts" in fostering the celebration of diversity and inclusion within the community.

Dr. McCaffrey received the award at the Mosque Foundation's 18th Annual Ramadan Iftar at the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview.

"I was truly humbled to receive this award," she said. "This is a Dorn award, not an individual award. All faculty and staff at Dorn work towards creating an inclusive environment where all students' cultures, religions, food and clothing preferences, hobbies and talents are understood and respected.

"It is an honor to be recognized by the Mosque Foundation for OUR efforts," McCaffrey said.

McCaffrey begins every day by greeting her students with an enthusiastic "Good Morning" in Arabic and/or English. Dorn has a large bilingual population and creating an inclusive environment for all is one of her top priorities. Recently, she began conducting meetings with Arabic-speaking families to discuss information and tools to help students achieve success.

In addition to explaining academic expectations, Dr. McCaffrey invites representatives from neighboring libraries and educational centers to speak on summer programs and support services available to students and their families.

Principal McCaffrey held the school's first "Dorn Ramadan Iftar" where she invited students and their families to learn about Ramadan and help fosterr an environment of understanding and friendship among families and staff.

Dr.. McCaffrey earned her doctoral degree in Educational Administration with an emphasis on Peace and Social Justice along with a Superintendent's Endorsement from Lewis University.
