Dorita McCabe Named Assistant Principal at Conrady Junior High
It’s just after 4 p.m. on a recent weekday and Dorita McCabe was excited as she drove to work as the newly minted assistant principal at Conrady Junior High School in Hickory Hills. Her first official day is August 1, but she wants to make sure the transition is a smooth one.
“(Principal) Adrienne (Pavek) and I are preparing for the new school year,” she said without skipping a beat. “We’re planning and scheduling and getting ready.”
Keep in mind that it was late in the afternoon and the two ladies still had hours of work ahead of them. And this is all less than four days since Mrs. McCabe was approved by the board of education as Conrady’s new assistant principal.
Her most recent position was department chairperson in the honors language arts program at Wilbur Wright Middle School in Munster, Ind. There she worked with staff to set goals, objectives and methods to help support the school’s vision.
Mrs. McCabe also adopted and implemented curriculum for the eighth-grade honors language arts program and created a data wall that analyzed the school’s math and language arts curricula.
She said she knew early in life that teaching was her future. “I had such great teachers growing up in South Holland,” she said. “They were passionate about teaching and it was inspiring. I wanted to inspire my students one day.”
After graduating from Thornwood High School she left for the desert and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Arizona State University. She would later earn two Master’s Degrees, one in Education, Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment from Calumet College of St. Joseph and a second in Educational Administration from Purdue University Calumet.
Mrs. McCabe said there are similarities between her former school and Conrady. Chief among them is that they are both “high-performing schools.” She said they also are similar in size and racial diversity.
“This is going to be a great fit,” she said. “I’m really excited about this opportunity to be part of North Palos District 117.”
Mrs. McCabe and her husband Matt have two daughters: Kylie, 13 and Regan, 11. Both girls play club volleyball. The family resides in South Holland.
