Glen Oaks Wins National Blue Ribbon Award (AGAIN)
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos on Thursday recognized Glen Oaks School as one of 362 schools across the country to receive the coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for 2019.
This is the second Blue Ribbon Award Glen Oaks has won in the last seven years. The Hickory Hills’ school won the award in 2012 and again this year for academic excellence.
Glen Oaks, a second- through fifth-grade school with 676 students, won in the category of “Exemplary High-Performing Schools.”
The Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student subgroup scores and graduation rates.
Exemplary High-Performing Schools are among their state’s highest-performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
In her second year as principal at Glen Oaks, Kristin Reingruber said the award is shared among the entire Glen Oaks and District 117 community.
“It is truly a great day to be a Panther!” Mrs. Reingruber said. “Being awarded the National Blue Ribbon not once, but TWICE is a direct reflection of the support and dedication provided by our families, staff, administration and school board. This is a wonderful honor for everyone connected to Glen Oaks School and NPD117.”
Glen Oaks was the only public school in the entire South Cook region to win the award.
The U.S. Department of Education will formally recognize the 312 public and 50 private schools at an awards ceremony at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, D.C. on November 14 and 15.
Secretary DeVos said in a statement that the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award affirms the hard work of student, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.
The NBRS logo that graces a school’s building is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning.
